This policy explains what is actually set on your device when you use smartenergyswitch.net, which is operated by Smart Energy Switch, a trading name of Smart Energy Group Ltd (company 09806625).

We do not show a cookie consent banner

You will not see a cookie banner on this site. We have chosen to describe what runs here instead, and to keep the list short. That means the analytics and advertising scripts below load as soon as the page does, and the only way to stop them is through your browser or an extension. The next section tells you how.

What actually runs on this site

1. Meta Pixel (Facebook and Instagram advertising)

We run the Meta Pixel on every page. It records that a page was viewed and, when you submit the quote form, that a lead was created. At that point the pixel also receives your name, email address, phone number and postcode, which it converts into irreversible hashes in your browser before sending them, so Meta can tell whether the person who enquired is the same person who saw one of our adverts. Meta sets its own cookies (_fbp, and it may read _fbc from an ad click) and is a separate data controller for what it does with them. See Meta's privacy policy.

2. Google Analytics 4 (only when enabled)

Google Analytics loads only if a measurement ID is configured for this site. When it is on, it sets Google's _ga cookies and records which pages you visited, roughly where you were, and how you arrived. It does not receive your name, email address or phone number. When no measurement ID is configured, the script is not loaded at all and no Google cookie is set.

3. Trustpilot review widget (only when enabled)

Where we show the official Trustpilot widget, Trustpilot's script loads from their servers and may set its own cookies to display reviews. This only happens on pages where the widget is configured; the plain text line stating our rating sets nothing. Trustpilot's cookies are governed by Trustpilot's own policy.

4. Cookies we need to run the site

The site is hosted on Netlify, which may set a small number of strictly necessary cookies for load balancing and security. The quote funnel keeps your answers in your browser's own storage while you are filling it in so a refresh does not lose them. Neither is used for tracking or advertising.

How to turn these off

Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, and most let you block third-party cookies entirely, which stops the Meta Pixel and Google Analytics from working as intended:

  • Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies
  • Safari: Settings → Privacy → Prevent cross-site tracking (on by default)
  • Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Enhanced Tracking Protection, set to Strict
  • Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions

You can also install a content blocker (such as uBlock Origin) which will stop these scripts loading, or opt out of Meta's advertising through your Facebook ad preferences. Blocking any of the above will not stop the site or the quote form working.
