Care homes with nursing carry everything a residential home does plus clinical dependency: more laundry per bed because of continence and wound care, more assisted bathing, more pressure-relief mattress pumps and profiling beds, sluice rooms and bedpan washer-disinfectors that heat water to 80 degrees or above, and a clinical treatment room that has to stay lit and powered. Residents are frailer and less mobile, so setpoints run higher again. CQC regulated about 4,186 care homes with nursing in England as at March 2025, and homes with nursing skew larger, commonly 30 to 70 beds.

Start your renewal conversation 9 to 12 months out. Nursing homes carry the highest consumption in the sector, so a small unit-rate difference is worth thousands rather than hundreds.
Check that the sluice and laundry hot water feed is properly insulated and that circulation pumps are timed. Disinfection temperatures are non-negotiable but the standing losses around them are not.
Audit which beds genuinely need an alternating pressure mattress running on the highest setting. It is a clinical call, not an energy one, but many homes find pumps left running on empty beds.
Get half-hourly data and look at the 2am to 6am floor. In a nursing home that floor is high, and it is the single strongest argument for a contract priced on your real load shape.
If you are dual-registered or run nursing and residential wings, make sure both meters are tendered together rather than renewing on separate dates.
