Energy in tyre and exhaust centres

Tyre fitting depots, exhaust and battery centres, wheel alignment and fast fit operations, from single bay units to multi bay depots.

Common energy challenges for tyre and exhaust centres

  • A compressor that is effectively the whole business, cycling all day for impact guns and inflation

  • Fitting bays open to the street, so every pound of heating goes straight outside

  • Forecourt and signage lighting burning through dark winter afternoons and evenings

  • Alignment rigs, balancers and the tyre machine left powered up between jobs

Where the energy goes

Typical equipment loads across motor trade and vehicle repair, with annual kWh and cost bands from published benchmarks.

Energy saving tips for tyre and exhaust centres

  1. 1

Size and service the compressor properly. On a tyre depot it is usually the largest single electricity load after lighting, and a leaking ring main wastes a fifth or more of it.

  2. 2

Fit radiant tube or plaque heaters rather than warm air in an open fronted bay. Radiant heat warms the fitter, not the street.

  3. 3

Put the forecourt and signage lighting on a photocell and a time clock so it is not on at three in the morning.

  4. 4

Move the fitting bay and forecourt to LED. Lighting is the top electricity consumer in most fast fit units.

  5. 5

Fit strip curtains or a fast door on the main bay if you can. Even a partial barrier makes a measurable difference to a heated bay.

Tyre or exhaust centre energy questions, answered

Published UK benchmarks put tyre and Exhaust Centres at roughly 12,000 to 55,000 kWh of electricity a year and 5,000 to 50,000 kWh of gas, which comes to about £3.7k to £17.6k a year at 25p per kWh for electricity, 7p per kWh for gas and around £365 in standing charges.
